Prepare for Severe Weather
- If the power goes out immediately shut off your stove and fans as the power may come back on while you are away
- Have flashlights, battery operated radio, extra batteries, blankets, first aid kit.
- Have bottled water—The American Red Cross recommends one gallon of water per person per day.
- Stock up on nonperishable food, medicine and any pet care items in case the power goes out or roads are blocked.
- Keep extra cash on hand since an electrical power outage may prevent you from withdrawing money from ATM's or banks.
- Turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting
- If the power goes out, this will keep food fresher longer.
- If you leave the refrigerator closed, most food will stay frozen or fresh for up to 12 hours.
- Phone charger
- Fill your gas tank if you own a car.
Designate Shelter
- Most importantly, know where to seek shelter in the event of severe weather: tornado, hurricane or flood warnings.
- Stay indoors away from glass doors and windows. Stay in a windowless room on the lowest level that is not likely to flood.
Emergency Contacts
- Make sure administration has updated emergency contacts.
