PVM and Wayne State University School of Medicine launched a unique program to provide physicians in training an opportunity to learn about the challenges of aging and experience the special qualities exhibited by older persons. The physicians in training provide educational opportunities on falls prevention, strength and balance exercises, properly managing medications, regular vision checks and how to make their living environments safer. During the evening meal of an overnight stay they interview residents and complete their biography to be given back as a gift.
The philosophy behind this innovative pilot program is that quality healthcare depends upon a physician's ability to internalize, reflect upon, and respond to the stories and emotions of their patients. With the aging of the population and the declining number of physicians who specialize in geriatric medicine, it is also thought that this program can be a motivational technique to spark interest in the field.
The four PVM pilot sites are The Village of East Harbor in Chesterfield Township, The Village of Westland in Westland, Thome Rivertown Neighborhood at PACE Southeast Michigan in Detroit and The Park at Trowbridge in Southfield.
