The Village of Hillside and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan announced an exciting expansion to services assisting seniors with food security and social engagement.
Historically, provided meals were delivered from the Petoskey Friendship Center and reheated on-site. In partnership with The Friendship Center of Harbor Springs, The Village of Hillside transformed the existing warming kitchen into a commercial kitchen.
Thanks to the generosity of St. John's Episcopal Church, The Frey Foundation, The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, and local donors, Hillside now has a new kitchen allowing them to cook fresh meals on-site. As a result, the number of seniors served has increased from 40 individuals per month to 150; meals are now offered five days per week instead of two.
The program is also expanding into new arenas and will move toward a Farm To Table approach whereby produce will be purchased from the Harbor Springs Farmers Market for direct use. Farmers who participate in the Farmers Market will be conducting classes and demonstrations in the community on utilizing fresh produce and creating healthy meals. In addition, The Village of Hillside can now operate its own Meals on Wheels program. These new offerings improve access to healthy nutrition and socialization for seniors in the community.
