Mission Statement

The mission of Delta Manor, Inc. Board of Directors is to manage and operate the Delta Manor facility to create an appealing and safe environment that enhances the quality of life for the residents.

History

Delta Manor is a seven-story high-rise apartment building in Detroit, Michigan. Comprised of 99 one-bedroom units, it is owned and operated by Delta Manor Incorporated, a Michigan non-profit housing corporation. The complex was dedicated in December 1988.

Conceived of and brought to life by the Property Task Force of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, which was formed in September 1983. Delta Manor's purpose is to server the housing needs of senior citizens. Delta Manor was also one of the first development projects of its kind in the United States to be initiated by a Greek-letter organization. Project leaders included Velma Walker, Cheryl Richardson McCall, Georgia Brown, Helen Garvin, and Leslie Gillespie, who also served as officers of the first Delta Manor Board of Directors.

The five million dollar project received grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, along with donations from sorority members and other supporters and significant assistance from the City of Detroit Community and Economic Development Department, which made the parcel of land available for development and provided other technical support.

Delta Manor is governed by a board of directors. Each director brings diverse skills and abilities to the tasks of setting a strategic direction for the complex and monitoring day-to-day operations.

In addition to ensuring the safety and security of residents and the fiscal viability of the corporation, the board is committed to enriching the lives of residents. To that end, the board sponsors numerous activities and programs for residents each year, including holiday parties, healthy living sessions, and ice cream socials.
